Fortune magazine and PINC AI have ranked Intermountain Medical Center in Murray as the number one major teaching hospital in the nation for 2024.

The Fortune rankings analyzed publicly available data from more than 2,600 hospitals across the nation to determine top performers in four categories: clinical outcomes, patient experience, operational efficiency, and financial health.

Intermountain Medical Center scored five stars out five in all four categories as well as 100% in community health survey performance.

“Our caregivers are at the forefront of innovation in healthcare and Intermountain Medical Center being ranked the top teaching hospital in the country shows that our vision is working,” said Ralph Jean-Mary, CEO of Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Intermountain Health is a nationally ranked integrated health system with internationally renowned programs run by some of the best clinical experts in the nation. Through fully accredited programs, qualifying candidates can complete medical residencies, fellowships, and other training at Intermountain Medical Center and a variety of Intermountain facilities.

Intermountain Medical Center serves as a major teaching hospital for local medical, pharmacy, and nursing colleges by supporting accredited training programs in internal medicine, emergency medicine, critical care, cardiology, surgery, neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, solid organ transplant, and pharmacy.

“At the center of all we do at Intermountain Medical Center is our intense focus on the patient,” said Lana McGIll, MD, internal medicine physician and Intermountain Medical Canter Chief Quality Officer. “We are training the next generation of healthcare workers to do the same using the latest technologies, research and evidence-based best practices.”

With 516 licensed beds and a full range of critical care, cardiovascular, pulmonary, cancer, neurological and obstetric services, Intermountain Medical Center is a major referral center, and Level 1 Trauma Center dedicated to providing the best care to patients from across the United States.

Intermountain Medical Center is also home to Intermountain Health’s adult abdominal transplant center which went from performing 38 liver transplants in 2018 to 166 in 2023 – an increase of 337 percent.

“This high performance by our transplant team is just another example of how our caregivers at Intermountain Medical Center strive to make services available for not just those living in Murray, but across the country,” said Jean-Mary. “They truly are saving and changing lives.”

Intermountain Medical Center physicians and caregivers treat some of the most complex cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and pulmonary cases and their research focuses on external benchmarks, clinical outcomes and overall patient experience.

The Medical Center’s team of almost 6,000 caregivers is constantly finding innovative ways to improve and deliver care including: telehealth and remote patient monitoring.

Nine other Intermountain hospitals in Utah were also ranked among the nation’s best hospitals on this year’s top 100 hospitals list, according to PINC AI and Fortune.

“When 10 percent of all the hospitals on a prestigious list like Fortune are from Intermountain Health, it shows how the innovative, caring and compassionate work our caregivers do on a daily basis is helping fulfill our vision of being a model health system – a charge given when our system was formed in 1975,” said Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health. “I’m proud of our caregivers for the work they do and the impact it has on our communities. Their work is an inspiration to me and to others.”

The annual Fortune and PINC AI Top 100 list is broken down into multiple categories with 40 being for teaching hospitals, and the remaining 60 slots for community hospitals.

Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital was listed fourth for teaching hospitals while Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital placed second in the category for Large Community Hospitals.
