Spectators have been stranded by weather-affected trains and extreme weather and water quality concerns worried Paris Olympics organizers whether their vision of athletes swimming through Seine would be realized.
Olympians, though, are in their element - literally.
Competitors so far have brushed off everything other than the race ahead like water off a duck's back.
Or water off an Olympic swimmer's back.
Wednesday, however, will be the first time the athletes will step out of the filtered and treated pool waters in the Olympic venues, and into the serpentine Seine - treated with whatever Parisians and tourists are putting into it, accidentally or otherwise.
These photos were chosen by AP editors and show the Olympians in action beneath the surface of the competition waters.
