DJ and PK talked about three of your favorite teams this week, the Jazz, the Utes and the Cougars.
The Utah Jazz have wrapped up the Salt Lake City Summer League and moved on to Las Vegas. Keyonte George has posted a couple of 30-point games. Has he taken a big step forward or do they just have too many players to keep him in the line up? Plus, Isaiah Collier has made an immediate splash with his ability to beat people off of the dribble, but the summer leagues typically have smaller, less imposing players. Will Collier be able to finish at the rim over bigger, veteran and more athletic players or will he develop a jump shot that pulls players away from the rim and a floater so he can score before he gets to the biggest rim protectors? The Jazz have also invested draft picks in a pair of athletic wings in Taylor Hendricks and Cody Williams. DJ and PK talk about their possibilities.
PK spent Friday talking football with Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham at the Ultimate Sports Bash and he also spoke with Brant Kuithe. Why did Kuithe return and what is capable of as the Utes debut in the Big12? We know the Utes have a clear path to the college football playoff if they win the Big12 Championship, but last year there were only 12 Power Five football teams with two losses after the conference title games. Presumably 11 of them would have made the playoff with one spot reserved for the highest ranked Group of Five team.
The Cougars are coming off of a 5-7 season, but turnovers cost them the road game at Kansas and the home game versus Oklahoma. BYU lost the turnover battle 3-0 in Lawrence and the Jayhawks scored defensive touchdowns in the first five minutes of each half. They were huge plays in a 38-27 BYU defeat. The Sooners also won the turnover battle 3-0 in Provo. Most Cougar fans remember the OU 100-yard pick six just when it looked like BYU was about to take the third quarter lead. But the Sooners also drove 52 yards for a touchdown after a second quarter fumble and they drove just 25 yards for the game winning score after a fourth quarter fumble. If the Cougars clean up the turnovers are they sure to have a winning record?
