Utah is a state divided.
On Thursday In northern Utah, we are dry with smoke-filled skies. This smoke is coming from fires burning in California and Oregon. Southern Utah, on the other hand, doesn't have smoky skies, but will have thunderstorms pop up this afternoon and evening.
Eventually, the thunderstorms chances will move to the north and the smoke will get lighter. Here's the timing on when that will happen, plus a look at what you can expect for the weekend.
THURSDAY
Northern Utah: Dry all day with partly cloudy skies. Winds from the west will continue to pull thick smoke into the area. Temperatures will reach into the upper 90s.
Southern Utah: Partly cloudy in the morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will pop up in the afternoon. Some of today's thunderstorms could become severe and produce heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Highs will top out between 102-104.
FRIDAY
Northern Utah: Skies will be smoky in the morning. Winds will shift by late morning, bringing in cleaner air from the south. This will thin out the smoke in the afternoon and evening. Those south winds will pull tropical moisture into northern Utah, and a few isolated thunderstorms will pop up during the second half of the day. Highs will get into the upper 90s again.
Southern Utah: Dry in the morning. Scattered thunderstorms will form in the afternoon and evening. Once again, some of these thunderstorms could produce heavy rain and gusty winds. High temperatures will be between 101-103.
SATURDAY & SUNDAY
Northern Utah: As tropical moisture continues to pour into northern Utah, more afternoon and evening thunderstorms will develop each day. Some light smoke will linger. High temperatures will be slightly cooler in the mid-90s.
Southern Utah: Mostly cloudy skies with scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms forming both days. High temperatures will top out right around 100.
